Improvisation Practice and Performance

Programa m.a.p.- Michael Schumacher y Kirstie Simson

Kirstie and Michael will be combining their extensive experience of dance improvisation in this workshop. They will be sharing what has kept them inspired in their practices for the last three decades. The workshop will include practical explorations of movement and attention. They will aim to develop and tune kinesthetic and perceptual awareness as a means of expanding experience and the grasp of what is available to us when we move. The classes will be about listening in the body and applying that listening to the activity of moving.

There is deep inspiration and rigor in a practice of improvisation that posits vulnerability at its heart. Developing the skills to care for, engage, respect and respond to that state of vulnerability gives life to improvisation that is powerful and transformative.

The work will be facilitated through exercises, open time for play and exploration, movement scores, observations and discussion. Much of the work will be experienced through partnering and connection with others, balanced with solo time for processing and reflection.

The workshop will tap into the dancers inherent kinesthetic awareness, and provide structures that offer the dancers own physical intelligence and range an open ground for exploration and integration. The workshop will be a forum for a shared learning experience between participants and teachers. Both Kirstie and Michael view their art form as their life practice, and they will share insights gleaned from thirty-two years experience of loving and living dance improvisation.

The course is designed for teachers as a unit and places of the people doing the two courses are prioritized.
