Júlia Rubies

JÚLIA RUBIES (1996) is a performing artist from Maresme, currently based in Brussels, with strong artistic ties to Barcelona. A graduate of P.A.R.T.S., Júlia has collaborated with choreographers such as Michiel Vandevelde, Marco D’Agostin, Georgia Vardarou, and has taken part in multiple projects with Mette Ingvartsen. She was also a member of PARASOL I, a company at Tanzquartier Wien, where she worked with Ian Kaler and Alix Eynaudi. In 2020-2021, she was awarded the DanceWeb scholarship for the Impulstanz Festival.
Júlia’s work explores the concepts of "place" and "belonging," both contextually and from an experiential/somatic perspective. This research takes various forms. In Brussels, she collaborates with MOTA, alongside Eszter Némethi and Liselore Vandeput, organizing nomadic discussions on artistic issues. In Barcelona, Júlia founded Cascades, an intergenerational project that invites experimental performing arts artists to share their practices. The project received the Injuve grant in 2020 and has since evolved into a nomadic study group that organizes events in the city. Cascades has been presented at the Hacer Historias Festival (2021) and at the Sâlmon Festival (2022) at El Mercat de les Flors in Barcelona. The Sâlmon Festival (2023-24) is a key supporter of the study group’s research trajectory.
Additionally, Júlia collaborates in other artistic projects as a performer and creative partner, often serving as an external eye or artistic advisor. She has also developed pedagogical activities at P.A.R.T.S., been a guest jury member for students at the Antwerp Conservatory, and is a co-founder and member of Accompany Class, a study group organizing training sessions for the Brussels dance community.
She Spells Sea Shells on the Shea Sore

She Spells Sea Shells on the Shea Sore ("She spells sea shells on the sea shore") is a modified version of the well-known English tongue twister, distorting its rhythm and meaning. It transforms the soft, luminous image of seashells by the shore into something raw and unsettling—where language falters and speech stumbles.
She Spells Sea Shells on the Shea Sore is a performative research project that explores the Female Voice through archetypal female figures shaped by myth and history. Analyzing figures such as the sirens, Medusa, Ophelia, and the banshee, the project investigates how these archetypes have influenced women's discourse, audibility, and perception over time. As part of a research phase, I will experiment with vocal and performative strategies such as repetition, decontextualization, and ventriloquism to interrogate these inherited narratives. The research aims to uncover how these archetypes continue to shape contemporary expression and explore ways to resignify their meanings. This project is a reflective inquiry into voice and agency, ultimately seeking to free us from the weight of these archetypes, offering new paths for interpretation and self-expression.
Cascades
